Saroj Koirala

Saroj Koirala (also known as shaheed Saroj Prasad Koirala) was a Nepali politician belonging to the Nepali Congress party, a cabinet minister in the first democratically elected government in the history of Nepal and a Nepali martyr.

After the democratically elected government was deposed by King Mahendra, Koirala went to India in exile and was active in revolutionary political activities. Koirala was assassinated in 1973 by the Panchayat regime in India’s Madhubani area. In Nepal’s 1957 parliamentary elections, Koirala was elected with a landslide victory from Dhanusa district.

Saroj Koiral had spent 8 years in exile in India and was jailed several times in Nepal due to his involvement in the democratic movement initiated by BP Koirala, Nepal’s first democratically elected prime-minister and Nepali congress leader.

Saroj Koirala’s widow Lila Koirala is a Nepali politician, a member of Nepali Congress Central Working Committee and an ex-minister for Women and Social Welfare.

The Saroj Koirala Memorial Foundation provides information and organizes different activities in memory of the deceased martyr.
